Progressing Ballet Technique (PBT)
Diarra Cummings decided to study and teach the Pilates method following a career as a concert dancer with the Dance Theater of Harlem and Garth Fagan Dance. After earning a B.A. from Columbia University, Diarra completed her Pilates teacher training through The Fitness Guru Teaching Lab Pilates Apparatus Certification. Diarra’s contemporary approach to Pilates emphasizes precise and conscious movement with attention to correct alignment and addressing anatomical imbalances. Additionally, Diarra has been certified under Pamela Warshay to teach Complete Clubs and is thrilled to share this unique system with her clients. She is also certified to teach Progressive Ballet Technique (PBT). Diarra has taught ballet for Brooklyn College’s Preparatory Center for the Performing Arts and the Alpha Omega Theatrical Dance Company. Diarra strongly believes in the transformative power the mind has over the body and roots her teaching in the belief that physical health and awareness are essential to reaching one’s optimum potential.
Julie Peterson has had a passion for movement since childhood and, upon earning her BFA in Dance from the University of Nebraska, moved to New York City and enjoyed a professional performing career in modern dance and musical theatre. Without giving away her age, she readily admits to having decades of experience teaching dance and fitness, and has been teaching Pilates since 2000 in New York City and Connecticut. Julie received her Pilates training and certification at the Stott Pilates International Training Center in Toronto and continues to study and refresh her teaching skills with masters of movement. Loving and riding horses her entire life, Julie is currently a competitive equestrian and has witnessed first-hand how the athletic grace attained through Pilates can benefit all bodies in all disciplines. She avoids teaching “cookie cutter” workouts and maintains the integrity of the work of Joseph Pilates while creating sessions focused on each client’s individual strengths and weaknesses.
